Who Needs a Plan?

We took Little Man to the science museum last weekend. I don't know who had more fun, the Man or Little Man.

We bounced all over the place, from here to there, up to this level, down to that level. Time for lunch, check out the water section. Oh, look - a spaceship!

I felt like a pinball.

__________

When our own kids were young and we took them to museums, we were very systematic and organized about seeing EVERYTHING. Every exhibit, big and small. We read every sign on every exhibit. In a linear and logical path, we covered ground.

We did not miss a thing.

Fast forward twenty-five years and we're operating much differently with a grandchild.

Little Man set the pace and the path. Want to play with an air cannon and a beach ball for fifteen minutes? Sure. We've got nothing else to do. Feel like moving sand around in a box for twenty minutes and watch the contours change color? Absolutely. We'll just wait over here. Care to play at the farmer's market playscape even though you have almost the same thing at home? No problem. They have different fruits and vegetables to play with here.

Such a different way to operate for us. No schedule, no plan. Just fun.

I loved it.
